Overview

The subclass 870 visa is a temporary visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years. This visa has gained much popularity with parents who wish to stay longer with their children in Australia.

About this Visa

After the grant of Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870):

  • You can visit Australia for up to 3 to 5 years per visa.
  • You can travel to and from Australia multiple times during visa validity period.
  • You can re-apply for further Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visas to visit up to a maximum period of 10 years in Australia.
  • You can NOT work in Australia on this visa.

Eligibility

Applicant Eligibility (subclass 870)

  • You must be biological or legal or adoptive parent or step-parent or parent-in-law of the “Parent Sponsor”.
  • You must be sponsored by the “Parent Sponsor”.
  • You must have access to enough funds to support your stay in Australia.
  • You must have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily. You won’t be able to able for permanent or temporary parent visa while holding this visa.
  • If applying from within Australia, you must have “Permission to Apply” in Australia.
  • You must have adequate health insurance.
  • You must meet Australian health and character requirements.

Parent Sponsor Eligibility (subclass 870)

  • Sponsor is usually your child or child’s partner, aged 18 years or over.
  • Sponsor must be either a settled and Australian citizen or permanent resident or Eligible New Zealand Citizen, usually resident in Australia for at least 4 years.
  • The sponsor must pass the income test i.e. must have latest reported taxable income of at least AUD83,454.80.
  • The sponsorship can cover up to 2 parents per household at a time.
  • The sponsorship must be approved by Department of Home Affairs.
  • Sponsor must meet character requirements.
